Learn about vaginal ultrasound for infertility testing
If you’re experiencing difficulty getting pregnant, your reproductive endocrinologist may recommend a vaginal ultrasound as part of the infertility testing process. At Texas Fertility Center, we offer this test in-office as part of our comprehensive fertility evaluation in San Antonio. Your results from a vaginal ultrasound and other fertility tests help us create an effective treatment plan to help you start or grow your family.
What is a vaginal ultrasound?
A vaginal ultrasound, also known as transvaginal ultrasound, is a medical imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce quality images of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Unlike an abdominal ultrasound, a vaginal ultrasound is performed by inserting a small, wand-shaped device into the vagina. With the transvaginal approach, it is easier and more accurate to obtain detailed and precise pictures of the reproductive organs.
A vaginal ultrasound can provide valuable information to your fertility doctor about the size and shape of the uterus and ovaries; the thickness of the uterine lining; and the presence of any cysts, fibroids or other abnormalities. This information can help your doctor identify potential causes of infertility and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
What to expect during a vaginal ultrasound
During a vaginal ultrasound, the patient lies down on an exam table very similar to the ones used during a pelvic exam. Instead of a speculum, a small ultrasound wand is gently inserted into the vagina and moved around to capture images from different angles. In the experienced hands of our fertility care team, this test typically takes about five to 10 minutes to complete, and is generally painless.
