Fertility testing for lesbians is often the first step on the family-building journey
Texas Fertility Center San Antonio provides a wealth of family-building options for members of the LGBTQ community. Before getting started on the path to motherhood as a same-sex female couple or a single woman, it’s important to get female fertility testing. Erika Munch MD uses the results of fertility testing for lesbians to develop a customized plan for each patient.
What happens at the first fertility appointment?
When you visit our San Antonio fertility doctor for a consultation, you’ll discuss your medical and reproductive history. This involves Dr. Munch asking questions about your medical background, family history, past pregnancies and menstrual cycle. If you have a partner, Dr. Munch will also ask her these questions.
The discussion with Dr. Munch will also involve answering questions about how each partner would like to be involved in the fertility treatment process. Specifically, she’ll want to know who wants to provide the eggs and who wants to carry the pregnancy.
Female fertility decreases with age. As a result, Dr. Munch will typically recommend that the younger partner provides the eggs for the pregnancy. However, fertility testing for lesbians can help reveal who the best candidate is.
What does fertility testing for lesbians involve?
Fertility testing for lesbians involves the same tests that are a part of standard female fertility testing. The goal is to learn more about your egg supply as well as your reproductive organs. As a result, our San Antonio fertility doctor will likely order the following tests.
Transvaginal ultrasound allows Dr. Munch to examine the ovaries and the uterus. It can help her take an antral follicle count to learn more about your egg supply. It can also help her identify any ovarian cysts as well as uterine polyps or fibroids.
Fertility bloodwork can provide information about your hormone levels and your ovarian reserve, or egg supply. Two of the most common tests are follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH).
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a test that occurs in a radiology department. It can help Dr. Munch determine whether your fallopian tubes are open or blocked. If the tubes are not open, there are fertility treatments available to bypass this issue.
Armed with your test results, our San Antonio fertility doctor can help you design the best family-building plan for your needs and goals. The treatments she might recommend could include intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm or in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor sperm. Reciprocal IVF is also an option, and it’s one that can allow both you and your partner to play a role in the pregnancy.
